WhatsApp had tweeted that they have processed 18 billion messages in one day on New Year’s Eve, out of which 7 billion messages were inbound and 11 billion messages outbound. WhatsApp surpassed 1 billion messages sent in a single day in November, 2011. Last August, it was handling 10 billion messages per day.

WhatsApp, the popular cross platform smartphone chat app, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to a report in  TechCrunch. Facebook has been aggressively focusing on its mobile efforts especially after it stocks took a drubbing down.
