This is one of the best news of 2009 for tech-savvy people all over the globe. A quad-core processor at $99, this is unbelievable! The processor, called Propus, promises to enhance multi-threaded applications’ performance, as well as to optimize games for Windows 7 with DirectX 11. Advanced Micro Devices announced two chips: Athlon II X4 620 and Athlon II X4 630. The CPUs have 2MB L2 (level two) cache, dual channel DDR2/DDR3 memory controllers, work at 2.6 GHz and 2.8 GHz respectively, and feature 95W thermal design power. The CPUs work on both AM2+ and AM3 platforms. The 630 model costs $122, while the 620 costs just $99.

Although the processors are not especially powerful, with rather low caches, they will demonstrate high speeds in next-generation video games that take advantage of DirectX 11, as well as in multi-thread rendering. “With AMD’s chipset, graphics and multi-core technologies working together, this mainstream desktop platform [code-named Pisces] is optimized for the new, visually intensive Windows 7 enhancements”, AMD stated.

Aside of what it has to offer, the price is unbeatable. Who would have thought that a company would sell a quad-core processor, and a pretty good one, at just $99? Now is our chance to upgrade our computers, before the stock runs out!
