To Combat Java 7 Vulnerability, Apple Blocking Java 7 Plugin on OS X

A major security vulnerability has been discovered in Java 7 security making billions of computers susceptible to a serious flaw. The threat is serious enough that the US Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall Java software on their computers, ZDNet informs.

The zero-day flaw affects not only the Java 7 plug-in, but all versions of the java plugin for web browsers. Apple has already taken measures to protect OS X users by quietly disabling the Java 7 plug-in, according to MacRumors. This was accomplished by updating the OS X “Xprotect.plist” file to require users to have installed an unreleased version of Java, “1.7.0_10-b19.”

“We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,” said the Department of Homeland Security Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in a post on its Web site on early Friday. “This vulnerability is being attacked in the wild, and is reported to be incorporated into exploit kits. Exploit code for this vulnerability is also publicly available.”
