Samsung Galaxy S III Cruises Past Apple’s iPhone 4S, Becomes Top Selling US Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy S III Cruises Past Apple’s iPhone 4S, Becomes Top Selling US SmartphoneAccording to Canaccord Genuity, Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone has dethroned Apple’s  iPhone 4S as the bestselling smartphone in the US in August. Apple’s iPhone 4S has remained at the top of the pile since its introduction last October. iPhone 4S sales in the US had been dipping in anticipation of the new iPhone launch, and the Galaxy S III’s  has managed to capitalise on that.

Samsung’s moment on top is likely to be short lived , the iPhone 5 is expected to kill off competition. Last quarter Apple had said that anticipation for the iPhone 5 for poor revenue results. Apple did post a 23 percent jump in revenue from the same quarter the previous year to $35 billion, but that was about $2 billion below Wall Street’s average forecast.

“We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top selling smartphone in the U.S. market,” wrote analyst Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity . “However, our checks indicated strong consumer interest and likely demand for the iPhone 5, and we believe Apple will return to strong number one smartphone share in the U.S. post the iPhone 5 launch.”
